LA CITTA’ RADIOSA
È un progetto di Public Art che consegue a “Public art a Trieste e dintorni”, la complessa operazione svoltasi tra il 2007 e il 2008 sul territorio del capoluogo giuliano.
È nato da una volontà di individuare luoghi abbandonati, disabitati e dismessi, in una parola de- antropizzati, della città di Trieste e della sua Provincia. I luoghi riguardano sia strutture architettoniche che spazi aperti, parchi o giardini abbandonati, o quegli interstizi anonimi – che Jilles Clément definirebbe “spazi indecisi” – lacerti di insediamenti naturali ai margini delle costruzioni, che s’insinuano nel tessuto del territorio urbano e soprattutto suburbano.
Il titolo si riferisce a Le Corbusier che nel 1935 teorizzò “La città radiosa” ridisegnando l’architettura e lo spazio abitativo in chiave razional/funzionalista. Vuole essere come una sorta di auspicio positivo, vagamente velato d’ironia, in una situazione opposta, di mancanza e di abbandono, che contiene tuttavia una potenziale spinta di trasformazione e di recupero attraverso ipotesi d’intervento creative, anche utopiche o visionarie, che contribuiscano innanzi tutto al riconoscimento di tali siti, e di seguito al loro eventuale riassetto e riutilizzo.
Il progetto, aperto ai giovani e a nuove idee, riveste anche una funzione educativa in quanto si propone di far conoscere luoghi dimenticati e accantonati della nostra città, di stimolare la loro scoperta e relativa indagine per un approfondimento cognitivo ed una successiva eventuale revitalizzazione. Quest’ultima da effettuarsi tramite i linguaggi ibridati dell’espressività contemporanea e le più aggiornate versioni della ricerca architettonica/urbanistica, sì da integrare passato e futuro, con uno sguardo attento all’ambiente.
Il progetto si svolgerà con la collaborazione dell’Assessorato all’Educazione, Università e Ricerca del Comune di Trieste, perché è nato da comuni interessi e necessità maturati in quest’area nel corso dell’attuazione del progetto “Public Art a Trieste e dintorni”. Vedrà inoltre la partecipazione della facoltà di Architettura dell’Università di Trieste e di altre strutture e associazioni giovanili attive nel territorio cittadino.
È un progetto collettivo che insiste sul territorio con l’obiettivo di provocarne una rinnovata sensibilizzazione e una consapevole appropriazione. Necessita di un sito web altamente interattivo, creato ad hoc, articolato in tre segmenti in quanto il progetto prevede tre fasi distinte :
La mappatura è lo strumento base di conoscenza che fornisce i dati multimediali (immagini, suoni, video, contributi testuali raccolti nel contenitore web) su cui poi intessere i propri ragionamenti ed ideazioni d’intervento. L’inserimento dei dati multimediali relativi ai luoghi censiti rispetta un protocollo di massima definito nel corso della strutturazione del sito. L’operazione oltre ad essere funzionale e propedeutica alle fasi successive, con il carattere fondante dunque di data-base, acquista una sua dignità autonoma di vera e propria opera d’arte sociale. Se con la costruzione del sito l’operazione può considerarsi conclusa nella sua fase strutturale, essa tuttavia è l’inizio di un percorso di ricerca territoriale e di variegata informazione, aperto a tutta la cittadinanza, auspicando un ampio coinvolgimento, in pratica infinito. L’intento è quello di promuovere un diverso più approfondito interesse per il territorio in cui si svolge la nostra vita, e di conseguenza una rinnovata coscienza degli spazi urbani e suburbani in cui essa si compie.
La successiva progettazione, finalizzata alla proposta di ipotesi di intervento, prevede al suo termine l’organizzazione di una mostra che illustrerà le idee elaborate, con i media più disparati, da artisti, da architetti/urbanisti, da creativi in genere anche con il concorso di altri professionisti - dal poeta al …botanico, per dire - in quell’ottica interdisciplinare più volte ribadita nell’ambito della public art, necessaria a una proposizione globale, a tutto tondo, di una ricerca che rispecchi la complessità del reale e della vita. Questa fase, nel corso della sua attuazione può prevedere diverse strategie operative, dai sopralluoghi collettivi, ai dibattiti allargati, all’organizzazione di workshop con il coinvolgimento di varie utenze.
La terza fase dell’operazione prevede la realizzazione di uno o più interventi ideati con il concorso di uno o più artisti e, come detto, anche con il coinvolgimento di diversi professionisti nell’attuazione di un processo di recupero, di valorizzazione o di modificazione di un immobile o di uno spazio aperto abbandonato, rimasto insoluto, o “indeciso”.
La realizzazione del sito web interattivo avviene con il sostegno della Provincia di Trieste.
Inoltre tutto il progetto gode del patrocinio della Provincia di Trieste.

THE RADIANT CITY
This is a Public Art project that derives from “Public art a Trieste e dintorni” (“Public Art in and around Trieste”), a multi-faceted initiative that took place in 2007 and 2008 in the Province of Trieste.
The project arose from a desire to identify sites in the city and province of Trieste that were abandoned, uninhabited and neglected – in other words “de-anthropized”. These include architectural structures as well as outdoor spaces, abandoned parks and gardens and those anonymous interstices – Gilles Clément’s “undecided spaces” –, fragments of nature in the margin of buildings, slipped into the fabric of the urban and, particularly, suburban environment.
The title is an allusion to Le Corbusier’s 1935 conception of “The Radiant City”, in which he redesigned architecture and living areas in a rational/functionalist manner. In this context, the title is intended, with slightly veiled irony, as a sort of good omen for a completely different situation: one that is characterized by neglect and abandonment, yet still has the potential for transformation and recovery through creative, or even utopian and visionary, intervention plans. These plans will first identify the sites, and then focus on their renovation and reutilization.
The project, which is open to youths and new ideas, also has an educational function, as it aims at stimulating the discovery of the forgotten and discarded places in our city, leading to a deeper understanding and subsequent revitalization of these sites. This revitalization will be accomplished by means of contemporary hybridized art-languages and the most up-to-date architectural/urban planning methods, integrating the past and the future, with a particular focus on the environment.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Trieste Councillorship for Education, University and Research, as the initiative arose from shared interests and needs that developed during the course of the “Public Art in and around Trieste” initiative. The Faculty of Architecture of the University of Trieste, as well as other youth institutions and organizations active in the city area, will also participate in the project.
The objective of this regional group project is to encourage renewed sensitivity and awareness. The project requires a highly-interactive, specially-designed website that will be subdivided into three sections, reflecting the project’s three distinct phases:
Mapping will be the basic tool for gathering the multimedia data (images, sounds, video, texts collected on the website), providing the framework for discussing and defining the intervention to be carried out. Multimedia data relating to the sites will be entered following a protocol to be defined as the website is constructed. In addition to having the basic character of a database and acting as a practical, preliminary step for the subsequent phases, the mapping will represent a true social work of art. Although the structural stage of the operation ends with the construction of the website, this also marks the beginning of a regional multi-faceted research and information path targeted at the general public in the hopes of generating wide, or even unlimited, involvement. The intention is to promote a different, deeper interest in the region where we spend our lives, thereby generating renewed awareness of the urban and suburban spaces in which we live.
The subsequent planning phase, aimed at generating intervention proposals, will involve an exhibition to illustrate, through a variety of media, the ideas formulated by artists, architects/urban planners, and other creative professionals, as well as participants ranging from poets to botanists. This phase will adopt the interdisciplinary approach that is so often emphasized in the realm of Public Art, and that is necessary for creating a global, fully-developed approach to research reflecting the complexities of reality and life. The implementation of the planning phase may involve the use of different operational strategies, including group inspections of the sites, general debates and the organization of workshops to engage the various users.
The third phase of the project will be the implementation of one or more interventions defined with the collaboration of one or more artists and experts to recover, renovate or modify a building or an outdoor space that is currently abandoned or “undecided”.
The interactive website will be created with the support of the Province of Trieste.
In addition, the entire project happens under the patronage of the Province of Trieste.
